Ibrahimi: Municipalities on the verge of bankruptcy, 31.6 million euros were taken from them in just three months
The Director of the Association of Kosovo Municipalities, Sazan Ibrahimi, said that during January 2026 alone, over 31.6 million euros were taken from Kosovo municipalities from the execution of court decisions, a blow that, according to him, is a direct blow to local finances and the normal functioning of local government.
"This is no longer a technical issue but a financial crisis caused by the lack of action by the Government. The figures are alarming and clearly show the extent of this collapse. Prizren over 12.3 million euros, Ferizaj over 7.3 million euros, Rahovec over 2.8 million euros, Vushtrri over 2 million euros, and municipalities such as Pristina, Deçan, Vitia, Gjakova are being hit hard," he said, Klankosova reports.
So, consequently, as he says, the first two municipalities account for over 60% of the total, which he says is a clear indicator of an unbalanced and unfair system.
"This trend is not accidental but is a direct result of collective contracts signed without financial coverage, central decisions without analysis of the impact on municipalities, and the total lack of intervention by the Government to stop this financial hemorrhage," he stated.
If this continues, according to Ibrahim, capital investments will stop, basic services will be jeopardized, subsidies for citizens will disappear, and municipalities will enter a complete financial collapse.
"Municipalities cannot and should not bear the burden of decisions made at the central level. This is unacceptable. On behalf of the municipalities of Kosovo, we demand: urgent intervention by the Government, immediate solutions for covering obligations from the central level, and an end to this practice that is financially destroying local government," said Ibrahimi.
