Iran's new supreme leader dies, US military confirms

After weeks of speculation and mystery over his health, the US military, through a post on X, says that official sources from Tehran have confirmed that Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has passed away.

According to initial sources, Khamenei did not survive the injuries sustained during the bombing that hit his residence last month, an attack in which his father, Ali Khamenei, was also killed.

His death is expected to trigger a new legitimacy crisis in Iran, as he had just been appointed as his father's successor at the head of the Islamic Republic.
